For many years I have wanted to do street photography, but I very rarely (read never) had the confidence to approach strangers in good faith and ask for their face.
Taking a photograph of someone these days feels strangely intimate; in a world of hidden cameras, we are suddenly vulnerable when we are being truly seen.
Good photography is a gift, which I believe every person should experience. You have no right to judge your appearance until you have seen yourself through the eyes of the artist.
On a recent photoshoot in Dublin City centre, while taking photographs I had planned many years ago, I thought to myself ‘I would love to take more portraits.’
I glanced down for a moment to adjust the lens and I heard a voice say ‘Excuse me.’
Now I don’t know about you but when someone approaches me in public, I assume they’re going to yell at me.
‘Yes?’
‘I was just wondering…’
‘Yes?’
‘Would you mind taking my portrait?’
