At 23 years old, Jonas Puidokas has already had several incarnations; the wide eyed teenager shooting his first watch commercial, the fly on the wall wedding videographer, the sharp eyed cinematographer shooting whiskey commercials.
But I met the free wheeling Jonas, who had sold everything that couldn’t be carried and set off into the big blue world. Dublin seemed cool and dry to him after four months in South East Asia, but that didn’t stop the lady behind the counter laughing at the two Irish people drinking peppermint tea in the early summer heat.
Cinematographers are unlike other artists in many ways. Their work is curiously intangible, it cannot be printed or cast. At its core is movement. It lives in a dream-like world in which time is sped up, perception is slowed, and disbelief is suspended.
And there is immense value in this realm. A good ad can spark joy, a good travel film can plant a seed of curiosity.
