Lydia Clayton is an exceptional goldsmith and designer.
This artist is soon to launch her latest collection of jewellery which masterfully weaves Irish myth and the most contemporary of forms together. Delicate, ethereal and made entirely in Co. Roscommon, this is a collection that will turn heads.
Lydia also creates commissioned pieces and remodels heirlooms, but it is in her own artistic practise, that her skills truly shine.
I had the great pleasure of photographing Lydia’s collection late last year, which was a marker of sorts that I was indeed growing into a photographer and not just a writer.
A lot of words have been spilled about multidimensional creatives, but the long and the short of it is that it is really difficult to contort yourself into boxes that no longer fit.
It’s hard to explain to people that you do many things.
It’s hard to weave a cohesive self story when you are simply along for the ride.
Damn, it’s hard to plan.
I might wake up and write a novel in the morning.
I might take the day off and build a sauna.
I might head for the hills and photograph rain drops for four hours.
It has taken me years and multiple iterations to finally say this is who I am and it’s so much fun being me.
I wish that for every creative and every reader and every human.
I wish you space to be who you are.
And I have some news about that soon.
But back to your brekkie you go.
See ya next Saturday.
