Hello!
Once christened the land of saints and scholars, Ireland has a rich history of fine metalwork, which combined function and beauty.
I recently had a very interesting conversation with a jeweller and, quite coincidentally, a few weeks ago, I found myself on a hill staring in the direction of Ireland’s only gold mine. Locals and local fish aren’t too happy about the arrival of one of the most destructive industries in the world; think gold for export, mercury and cyanide for me and thee.
I started to wonder if those slender bands, on which we place so much meaning, link us not only to each other but also to the earth. Could a gleaming necklace tell a story other than gilded exploitation?
Future articles will explore this topic further, but in the meantime, please enjoy this selection of jewellery made in Ireland with the least amount of impact possible.
Happy shopping!
