Chance encounters of the normal kind
There’s something fascinating about chance encounters. Good stories rarely come from living by the book; step outside your well trodden path and something is bound to happen.
Several years ago, I found myself in a small room with two doors. That’s not a metaphor or a euphemism for a spiritual experience, it was literally a room with two doors.
You see, a medical student, a soft, squishy creature, which I once was, is expected to present themselves at various clinics, eager, useless and ready to learn.
In that moment, I was given a choice in a world of few choices. Usually a schedule would dictate your assignment, but the further you get from Dublin, the less important schedules seem.
So I took a shallow little breath and knocked on the door on the right.
It jerked open and I found myself in a world of wonderful patients and interesting conversations. Appendices flew left and right, as we traded stories about friends and family and interesting cases.
